UPDATED x4 - Obama meets with the undeclared Superdelegates

Thu May 08, 2008 at 08:02:22 AM PDT

After Obama's convincing win in North Carolina and near-tie in Indiana, the superdelegates have all the cover they need to make the jump.

Obama increased his pledged delegate lead, wiped away any gains Clinton had from Pennsylvania, and gave a rousing speech in which he opened the door for a flood of endorsements.  He called for unity while also stating "this is the time to end it."

Yesterday, Obama's campaign sent a letter to the superdelegates urging them to bring the process to a close.

That could happen today when Obama meets with many of the remaining undeclared superdelegates.

Yesterday

49 high profile superdelegates met behind closed doors to discuss the race.

Obama also picked up support from:

Jerry Meek, chairman of the North Carolina Democratic Party

Inola Henry, a member of the D.N.C. from California

Jennifer McClellan (a former Clinton supporter, so this is a double score!).

He also picked up support from former Senator George McGovern (formerly a Clinton supporter) who is well known but is not a superdelegate.

So far today,

Obama has picked up support from David Bonior (NC), the campaign manager for the 2008 presidential race of Sen. John Edwards will endorse Obama today.

There is also a chance that the nine members of The Pelosi club may come out for Obama now.  As Jeff in CA and PocketNines explained - while Obama has not technically reached the 1627 pledged delegate majority (currently he's at 1589.5 according to DemConWatch) he's Checkmated Clinton due to the viability threshold.  There are 37 mini contests left in the next 6 primaries. So far, Obama has been viable in every CD. 1589.5 + 37 = 1626.5 (only 0.5 delegates short on the clear pledged delegate win).

UPDATE: I'm trying to find the MSNBC video of Obama surrounded by superdelegates this morning.  mini-update: Thanks to Jahiz for this video link.

There should be some kind of statement / release shortly.  I will update as soon as it is released.

Smartdmmg and Kitty caught this reference to Obama being enthusiastically welcomed by everyone including Clinton supporters.

UPDATE 2:
According to Ben Smith, some of the superdelegates that Obama met include Gabrielle Giffords (Ariz.), Dan Boren (Okla.), Mike McIntyre (N.C.), Zack Space (Ohio), Charlie Melancon (La,), Tim Mahoney (Fla.) and Jim Costa (Calif.).

UPDATE 3:
This was apparently a bold and perhaps unprecedented move for Obama to actually meet with some superdelgates on the House floor.  For the most part, he was greeted with substantial enthusiasm.

UPDATE 4:
Obama also spoke with Clinton supporters and undecided superdelegates including John Murtha (Pa.) Bill Pascrell (N.J.), Chris Van Hollen (Md.) and John Spratt (S.C.) along with many other superdelegates who have already endorsed him.
