ING Bails out of SS Coulter
Thu Mar 08, 2007 at 06:11:41 AM PDT
Hey everybody. I like to read DKos a lot, but mostly as a means of finding out ways to engage in net activism, be it donating to Act Blue, signing the Gore Pledge, or anything else. So I contacted ING yesterday regarding their ad on Coulter's site. I wasn't expecting a response, but please join me over the fold for some good news to start your day.
This was my e-mail (from my university account to lend it some weight if you will).
To Whom It May Concern,
For the past year and a half my brother has been trying to
get me to open up an ING savings account, primarily based on
their good interest rates. I always told him I would after
college when I get a real job. It just so happens that
college ends for me in 2 months and I have a job lined up at a
decent Chicagoland lawfirm. I still would love to open an
account with ING, but I can only do business with companies
that are socially responsible.
Following Ann Coulter's declaration that John Edwards is a
"faggot," numerous interested parties on the internet have
made an effort to convince companies that advertise on her
website to disassociate themselves from bigotry. I was
saddened to go to her site today and see a banner ad up. It
was of course an ING banner that linked to ingdirect.com, and
it really made me think twice about where I'm going to open up
my savings account. Of course, there's almost a 100%
probability that ING did not approve this decision, and the ad
was the result of a third party advertising associate. That's
fine, but please look into this and pull your support for Ann
Coulter.
I saw the banner ad at 5 pm, 3/7/07. A screenshot for proof
is attached. Please address this issue. For some of us, our
morals and politics comes before our savings rate.
Yours,
Jonathan Greenberg
I tried to be polite, but firm with the direct implication that my business is contingent about proper corporate citizenship. Not 5 minutes ago I wake up and this is in my inbox:
Dear Mr. Greenberg,
ING DIRECT is no longer advertising on Ann Coulter's website. Although we are eager to spread our message of savings, we do not wish to be associated with polarizing commentary.
As a result, we are reviewing the processes in place with the third party vendor who distributed the ad to ensure our ads will not be placed on sites that may be offensive. We have no intention of advertising on Ann Coulter's website in the future.
We appreciate your calling attention to this matter and hope you will continue to support ING DIRECT.
Kindest Regards,

ING are officially good guys. If this has already been diaried I'll delete, but it looks like we have another victory. Thanks to VolvoDriving Liberal for getting this started and for driving volvos!
